Labor Day signals the end of summer, so say goodbye to lazy days and sunny skies with fun games, classic BBQ favorites and maybe even a movie under the stars! We complied some of our staff’s favorite ways to celebrate the end of summer and all it represents.
Kambria, one of our designers, likes to organize a block party with her neighbors over the Labor Day weekend. “I love to gather on my street with all the neighborhood families to end summer with a bang!” she says, ” We all drag out our BBQs and smokers, set up tables in the street, and have games for the kids likes Corn Hole and Capture the Flag. One year we all chipped in to rent a huge inflatable water slide! That was a huge hit!” Kambria stresses that the event is low-key and fun. “We don’t worry about everything matching or coordinating who brings what ahead of time. This takes the pressure off of the already busy back-to-school time and lets people relax and enjoy themselves,” she explains. After the sun sets, firepits are lit and marshmallows are roasted. “It’s really all about making connections and celebrating community and we look forward to it all year.”
Amy, who handles social media for Pottery World, likes to host a backyard dinner for family and friends at the end of the season. She swears by her recipe for grilled wings with a honey glaze and her family always requests her watermelon salad with feta and basil. Amy serves fresh lemonade with lavender and fruit-infused iced-tea from huge glass dispensers so she “never has to worry if a guest’s glass is empty!” Her favorite part of the evening is when everyone gathers on the lawn with blankets and pillows to watch a movie on their outdoor screen. She says, “We will watch anything from a classic film to a kids’ cartoon and everyone just piles in together, including the dogs. I love it!”
For Chris, who works in outside sales, Labor Day means a quick get-a-way to nearby Lake Tahoe where he spends the weekend with his friends. After a day on the lake, Chris hosts dinner and serves up classic BBQ from his new Fervor Grill. “We’ll load up the grill with burgers, home-made sausages and sometimes shrimp,” he explains, “The Fervor has adjustable burners so individual items can cook at their own perfect temperature.” One of his favorite sides to serve is roasted veggies, also from the grill. “I just toss whatever vegetables I can find, potatoes, squash, onions, green beans, in olive oil and add garlic and sea salt and then put them in the roasting basket. By the time the burgers are done, the veggies have a smoky flavor and are roasted perfectly.” After dinner Chris and his buddies have their annual horseshoe tournament. “It’s such a great weekend,” he says.
