Helpful Tips for Decorating Inspiration

Decorating (or re-decorating as the case may be) a room can be a challenge. There is quite a bit of thought, organization, planning and creativity involved. If you are looking to take on the mission of decorating one or more of the rooms in your house, here are some tips to help make the process a little easier.

Gather your resources
If you look around, you will see that inspiration is all around you. With all the different types of technology delivering information to us everywhere we go, it is difficult NOT to notice. You can use all of this information to your advantage. Search every available resource you have for inspiration:

  • Internet; Google, Pinterest, Facebook
  • Magazines/Catalogs
  • Your favorite store, coffee shop, fabric/craft store or restaurant
  • Your friends house
  • Your smartphone; take photos of everything you see that inspires you. Get close ups of colors, textures, patterns.
  • Collect fabric swatches, ribbons, etc.

Start printing, cutting, ripping, gluing and pasting! Go out and get some large white poster board and fill half of it with your first round of inspirational pictures, colors, swatches, etc. (TIP: use a glue stick so you can move, or remove, items as you go.)

Choose a color scheme

Take a look at what you have on your board and decide on a color scheme. It is best to stick with 2-4 colors, picking one as the main color. Add your colors to the center of your poster board.

Choose your favorite elements

Review your board once more and choose the elements that you “Must Have”. Move these to the other half of your poster board. This part may be tough. After all, your board is made up of all your favorites already, right? Do your best to analyze everything and pick the things that stand out to you the most; those are the elements you want to focus on. That doesn’t mean you can’t use other elements from your board, but try not to overdo it — sometimes simple is best.

Most importantly, remember that this process takes time. Give yourself a few weeks to work with and look at your board and really think about the items you have added. Revise it as many times as you want until it is perfect. Try to avoid impulse buys and carefully consider the necessity and usefulness of each new item you want to add. One last thing to remember, if you get stuck or need an unbiased second opinion, the decorating professionals here at Pottery World are always happy to help.
