Spring is almost here again! It is time to start thinking about your backyard — specifically, maintaining your fountain. If you have a fountain, it is important to clean it regularly to prevent algae and mineral build up and keep it looking as beautiful as the day you bought it. Spring is the perfect time to get that chore out of the way.
Assuming you have properly prepared your fountain for the cold winter months (draining the water and covering it with a weather-proof tarp), getting your fountain running again for the backyard season should be a breeze. To help make it even easier to get your fountain running beautifully once again, here is a short list of tips and guidelines.
- If at all possible, use distilled water. This will help minimize mineral and algae build up.
- If there is any mineral or algae buildup in your fountain, scrub it thoroughly with white vinegar and/or baking soda* and a stiff-bristled scrub brush being careful not to scrub too hard which can scratch the finish. You can also soak the pump in a 50% water/white vinegar solution to loosen any mineral stains or deposits.
- After you fill your fountain, the experts at Pottery World recommend using our Pottery World Water Clarifier to reduce mineral scaling, prevent mosquito larvae from hatching and preserve your fountains finish. Pottery World Water Clarifier is conveniently sold at both our Rocklin location as well as our El Dorado Hills location.
*NEVER USE POOL CHEMICALS, BLEACH, CHLORINE OR ANTI-FREEZE ON YOUR FOUNTAIN FOR ANY REASON. THIS CAN DETERIORATE THE CEMENT.
Following these easy steps every Spring will help ensure that your fountain lasts a long time and keeps its beautiful appearance, giving you that serene backyard setting year after year.
